The man was a painter who changed art between the 1500s and the 1600s using dark tones to create realistically dramatic paintings.
He was known for being controversial and living on the edge as did his paintings which I would soon find out.
I ventured out with two other participants on Glocalize Yourself’s “In the Footsteps of Caravaggio” walking tour where we literally walked the same streets Caravaggio did when he was in Rome.
As we swayed back and forth on the bus across the Tiber River, Daniele described the life of Caravaggio and how he came to be an artist.
Hopping off, we were already in the streets Caravaggio once walked.
We visited three churches along with the outside of Caravaggio’s actual apartment he once lived in.
Daniele would point out specific buildings with significance to the painter and his life.
As we entered the quiet and vast Church of San Luigi dei Francesi, we observed the copies of three of Caravaggio’s well known paintings as we were given the entire background, down to every single detail and secret hidden in each of the paintings.
After given context, we approached the dauntingly large paintings up on the walls of the church and joined the other onlookers, gawking at the incredible work.
Caravaggio had an eye for the dramatic as he painted controversial events of the time period.
He carefully placed every single element of his paintings in a specific spot.
It is almost as if it were a hunt for the clues that lead you to discovering the true meaning behind the painting.
